Budget

After students determine they have enough information to develop a budget, they will create the spreadsheet to calculate costs.
  • Teach the concept of budgeting. Create sample budgets.
  • Mini Lesson on creating a spreadsheet in ClarisWorks.
  • Identify terms i.e. cells, rows, columns, labels, values and formulas.
  • Add and organize information in a spreadsheet.
  • Create formulas for adding values in cells.
  • In small groups of 4, students will create a budget for the class aquarium.
  • Budget Assessment:
    • solve real-world problems involving number operations;
    • select and use operations to create the budget (e.g. multiplication as the inverse of division);
    • able to estimate a reasonable result for the budget;
    • choose appropriate computational procedures and tools (e.g., calculators, pencil and paper, mental computation, estimation) to solve problems.

 

Resources & Materials:

  • Class database with information on saltwater fish
  • Spreadsheet software
  • One computer for each small group (2-4 children)
