Working With Information

Students will locate answers to their questions and information on saltwater fish. Students will create a database to store & organize useful information
  • Brainstorm "What categories should we set up for organizing information?"
  • Demonstrate how to create fields in a database.
  • Model examples of the type of data that should be entered in each field.
  • Locate information on saltwater fish starting with web sites linked from the class database.
  • Demonstrate how to sort and find information in database.
  • Reading & Research Assessment
    • Uses graphic organizers to gather and record information for research topics (e.g., notes, charts, graphs);
    • Compiles information into written reports or summaries;
    • Uses a variety of resource materials to gather information for research topics (e.g., magazines, newspapers, dictionaries, schedules, journals, phone directories, globes, atlases, almanacs);
    • Organizes information and ideas from multiple sources in systematic ways (e.g., time lines, outlines, notes, graphic representations, database);
    • Determines the appropriateness of an information source for a research topic.

Resources & Materials:

  • Chart paper and markers
  • Class web page on saltwater fish resources
  • Database software
  • One computer with Internet access for each small group (2-4 children)
